1 Cultivation of talents in the computer industry The demands of professional manpower of software are expected to increase rapidly

The Department of Software Engineering has cultivated talented people for the computer industry. As the needs of professional manpower who are able to be in charge of diverse kinds of Software R&D required in high-tech industries such as information security, smart phone, game, etc. in the field of Information Technology(IT) has increased, it was established separately from the existing department of computer engineering in 2011.

The causes of the lack of the manpower in software of corporations in Korea is that the field of software has been neglected while the industries has been developing mainly on hardware. Recently, the electronics industry, however, has been paid far more attention to software rather than hardware, so it is indispensable to enhance the ability of software by coping with its change of a business model. According to the reports of the national research and development institutes of 2009, the demand of manpower in software industries will increase at an average annual rate of 9.4%, and the reports showed that the field of software will suffer from the shortage of over 56,000 workers for 4 years to come.

Furthermore, as a part of government policy for balanced development of the nation, public organizations(Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency, Korea Internet & Security Agency, etc.) will be moved to Chungbuk province and the demands of professional manpower in the field of software are expected to increase rapidly for developing one of the province’s strategic industries, which are mobile communications(development of smart phone application), security, u-city construction, etc.

2 Education for leading the future society of IT Field Cultivation of well-rounded people who have the problem-solving skills in the high industrialized technology society and Producing the creative and practical manpower for the field of software

By enhancing students’ research ability and knowledge in the field where a computer has been applied through studies, understandings and practical works on computer itself by the various fields of computer education to meet the demands above, the Department of Software Engineering has pursued an objective for the cultivation of well-rounded people who have the problem-solving skills in the high industrialized technology society and the cultivation of creative and practical manpower leading the cutting-edge digital information and cultural enterprises.

On the basis of an ABEEK program, the Department of Software Engineering will provide major-based education, education applied the demand of technology from industry as well as education mainly with practical works through the direct and indirect participation and contribution of faculties, students and industries intimately connected to one another in the education of this department. Furthermore, the curriculum primarily covers a basic theory of computer and in-depth practice of programing and the latest IT technology based on an innovative course of study. With this systematic curriculum, students will lead the field of IT for the future of society in the various fields of computer application.
